Executive Director


Steve Newman

Steve is the Founder and Executive Director of Evanston Scholars. Since 1997, he has taught at Evanston Township High School  (ETHS) – Junior English and Senior Studies (an interdisciplinary course that combines English, history, and service learning). Steve received the Golden Apple Award in 2004. He has also worked as a Teacher Trainer for incoming college freshmen and sophomores as part of the Golden Apple Scholar Summer Institute program. Steve co-authored Real Life 101: How to Redesign the Senior Year of High School; as well as articles in Harvard Education Letter, Educational Leadership, and Edutopia. For the past 15 years, Steve has also been a private tutor for the ACT and runs a series of College Essay Workshops every summer. 

Steve’s past also includes working for the McGaw YMCA as teen coordinator, as well as working for Camp Echo as an adventure trip guide and outdoor education director.

Born in Evanston, he went to ETHS, the University of Michigan, and graduate school at the University of Chicago. He currently lives with his wife and two kids in Evanston.
