Read the latest MENTOR MINUTE...Our Mentor Steering Committee has started a new publication specifically for Evanston Scholars Mentors. We hope to give you more information about the challenges our students face and what you can do to support them. We will also provide outing ideas, links to articles and and more information, etc. We will use your feedback and communications to inspire content.
Evanston Scholars Mentors
Mentors for Evanston Scholars serve as primary support to Scholars and families as they move through the college application and financial aid process. In addition mentors support the Scholar through their college years.
The following summarizes the requirements of an active Evanston Scholar mentor:
Regular communication is recommended to sustain a good relationship. We recommend some type of contact at least two times each month in the form of phone call, email, card or outing/activity/meeting. To assist in the relationship building process, Evanston Scholars will organize some activities for students and mentors to get together. These opportunities give you the chance to connect with other mentors and students at fun, social events. These continue through the Scholar’s first two years in college with regular check-ins to get updates, help to problem solve, and offer encouragement.
Mentor Programming Attendance
Most Evanston Scholars workshops and events are designed to support your Scholar
through the college-readiness and college application process. All of these events are mandatory for Scholars, and we strongly encourage attendance for mentors. Your presence at workshops reinforces your commitment to your scholar and his/her pursuit of higher education.
Career Readiness and Networking Support
Mentors will assist Scholars with resumes and cover letters in preparation for summer work. They work to encourage Scholars to take advantage of various career readiness opportunities. Mentors role model for Scholars how to build and sustain a professional network. Mentors regularly communicate with Scholars in college to encourage regular engagement with opportunities and guiding them towards future career pathways.
Recruit Mentors, if Possible
The Evanston Scholars program wants to serve an increasing number of students in need. We have found that the enthusiastic endorsement of Evanston Scholars by our current mentors is one of the most effective ways to spread the word about our mission and bring new supporters into the Evanston Scholars family. Please contact Demisha Lee if you would like to refer a potential mentor.

"Mentoring has reminded me that being a high school senior is no joke. They have the pressures of being a student (grades still matter), their future depends on conquering the overwhelming process that is trying to find and get into college, and on top of it all, many are dealing with real life, adult, social and financial worries. I remember the support that got me through this time years ago and I am very glad to be able to help someone else through it now." -- Mentor
